DANISH DESIGN BRAND FOR CHILDREN WINS GERMAN DESIGN AWARD 2024 IN THE FURNITURE CATEGORY

Danish design brand, Oaklings Copenhagen, insists that design for children should be just as important as design for the rest of the home, where many choose to invest in good craftsmanship. The brand’s own children’s furniture must have a quality and timeless design that will last throughout childhood and even be passed on to the next generation. Oaklings Copenhagen is now being recognised by the rest of the design industry, and they were among the winners of the international German Design Award 2024 Special Mention in the category “Excellent Product Design - Furniture” with the Storm Kid’s Chair.

When Founder of Oaklings Copenhagen, Anja Pajor, was approached by the German Design Award, she insisted that her furniture did not belong in the children’s category but in the furniture category. This decision proved to be the right one for Oaklings Copenhagen, and the Danish design brand ended up being recognised in the furniture category, “Excellent Product Design” with the Storm Kid’s Chair. “Our designs should be able to work with the rest of the home’s interior and not be hidden away in a children’s room. We are therefore incredibly proud to win the Special Mention award in the category “Excellent Product Design - Furniture” and not least happy that we stuck to our decision that we belonged in the furniture category,” says Founder of Oaklings Copenhagen, Anja Pajor, about the prestigious award.

Storm Kid’s Chair
Acclaimed designer Nina Bruun designed the winning product, the Storm Kid’s Chair, and the rest of the Oaklings Copenhagen collection. The inspiration for the collection comes from the good craftsmanship of the old days, when children’s furniture was made of solid materials and had a long lifespan. But also, a time when children’s furniture was designed by recognised architects and had a classic design on par with the rest of the home’s interior design. It is this uncompromising approach to both quality and design that characterises Oaklings Copenhagen’s collection and ensures that the furniture remains relevant and hopefully appreciated for generations to come.

The Storm Kid’s Chair is designed for children aged 3-6 years. The chair is very stable, and the vapour curved back, and low armrests provide optimal support for the child. A special detail of Oaklings Copenhagen’s furniture is that it comes with a set of brass plates that can be engraved with the child’s name or a personalised message, helping to pass on the chair’s history to future generations.

In addition to the Storm Kid’s Chair, Oaklings Copenhagen’s collection consists of the Saga High Chair, which can be used by children from 6 months to 6 years, and the Smilla Toddler Chair for children from 6 months to 4 years. All furniture is available in natural oak, smoked oak and black lacquered oak.

Based on good old-fashioned decency, the furniture is produced and hand-assembled locally in Europe. The chairs are made from FSC-certified oak and lacquered with a non-toxic matt lacquer that makes them easy to clean. In addition, the collection is tested and approved according to current European safety standards.
